NCoC believes the foundation for an engaged, informed, giving, and trusting citizenry is fostered through meaningful civic education and learning programs. NCoC’s work in the civic learning space is encompassed in our CivicNation initiative. Under this initiative, we partnered with the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools to issue an an update to the 2003 “Civic Mission of Schools” report.

Like the 2003 report (produced by CIRCLE and the Carnegie Corporation of New York) the “CMS 2.0” report is be a community-wide assessment of the challenges confronting civic learning, with cross-sector recommendations to strengthen and improve it for all students. The new report contains research conducted and published since 2003, and addresses new topics such as the civic learning opportunity gap, the role civic learning can play in developing 21st Century workplace skills, the role of new media in the classroom, and how civic learning can best be measured. The report was released during the 66th Annual National Conference on Citizenship in September 2011.
