Sustainable Impact: A Civic Return on Investment

Our nation is facing a time of great challenge, but strong public engagement could be the key to lifting us out of these tough times. Leaders of government, nonprofit and business sectors must commit to sustainable impact across the sector through a new lens of engagement-- one that recognizes, values, and upholds a civic return on investment.
The 2009 Annual Conference, to be held September 9 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.) at the Library of Congress, will challenge the ways return on investment are evaluated. We will explore how public engagement can help us overcome the challenges our country is facing. We will share plans to encourage commitment to civic responsibility not only through spending, but also through action and collaboration. Together, we will revitalize trust, broaden how we define investment, and renew citizenship across America.

8:00 a.m.-- Breakfast and Networking
9:00 a.m.-- MSNBC Journalist Chris Matthews will begin the day with a tribute to the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy
9:20 a.m.-- Ashoka President Diana Wells, GenerationEngage Co-Founder Justin Rockefeller, Director of the White House Office of Social Innovation Sonal Shah and Global Health Corps President Barbara Bush will participate in a Social Innovation panel to discuss the importance of innovation in our society, and the role of citizens, nonprofit, and government in expanding it. The panel will be moderated by Jean Case.
10:20 a.m.-- Former Florida Senator Bob Graham, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, and Executive Director of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality Helen Torres will join us to release the 2009 America’s Civic Health Index and discuss the impact of the economic crisis on the civic health of states.
11:10 a.m.-- Robert G. Stanton, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Policy and Program Management, will discuss the role of public lands in helping citizens realize the full meaning of democracy and introduce a short clip from the new PBS documentary by Ken Burns,"The National Parks: America’s Best Idea."
11:30 a.m.-- Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will deliver a keynote address and receive the Franklin Award
12:15 p.m.-- U.S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant Eric Greitens will receive the Major Smith Memorial Award for answering the call to serve through both his military career and his civic life.
12:25 p.m.-- For the second year, Chief Judge Royce Lamberth will perform a naturalization ceremony. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL) will provide the ceremony introduction.
1:00 p.m.-- Adjournment and Lunch
