The Choices Program

The Choices for the 21st Century Program is a national initiative to engage secondary level students in study and deliberation on critical international issues within the core curriculum. Choices is a program of Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies. The Choices Program is grounded in the conviction that an American public that does not know about the world beyond our borders and our place in it-and does not care-will be ill-prepared for life in the 21st century.

Mission

At the heart of the program's mission is a belief that we must find ways to engage American young people in consideration of the most pressing international concerns of the 21st century, and to instill in them a commitment to continue to care about these issues and to participate in shaping the world in which they live in the years ahead. In service of this mission, the Choices Program creates compelling, compact, and well-researched curricular resources on significant global challenges-past and present, provides professional development for teachers at the secondary level nationwide, and organizes programs for secondary level students connecting the classroom with the community beyond.

Achievements

Choices curriculum resources are used in approximately 7500 secondary schools nationwide. Its Capitol Forum on America's Future is currently running in 12 states
