America’s Promise

America’s Promise is attempting to create a nation of neighborhoods, uniting citizens of all nationalities, religious faiths and political parties in a common goal — meeting the needs of our children and youth.

Mission

Our Mission is to mobilize people from every sector of American life to build the character and competence of our nation’s youth by fulfilling Five Promises: ongoing relationships with caring adults, safe places with structured activities, a healthy start, marketable skills, and opportunities to give back.

Five Promises:

  1. Caring adults in their lives, as parents, mentors, tutors, coaches
  2. Safe places with structured activities in which to learn and grow
  3. A healthy start and healthy future
  4. An effective education that equips them with marketable skills
  5. An opportunity to give back to their communities through their own service

Our Vision to catalyze and support effective local community efforts that fulfill the Five Promises for youth, connecting them to essential resources from organizations with national reach. The Five Promises include: ongoing relationships with caring adults — parents, mentors, tutors or coaches — offer youth support, care and guidance; safe places with structured activities during nonschool hours provide both physical and emotional safety for youth; adequate nutrition, exercise, and health care pave the way for healthy bodies, healthy minds, and smart habits for adulthood; marketable skills through effective education help youth navigate the transition from school to work successfully; and opportunities to give back through community service enhance self-esteem, boost confidence and heighten a sense of responsibility to the community.

Achievements

The "100 Best Communities for Young People" is an annual competition that will provide national recognition for innovative efforts that are making a difference for America's children and youth. Every city, town and local municipality in America is eligible for recognition. The "100 Best" will represent communities from all strands from the rich fabric of American life - rural, suburban and urban - and from all regions of the country
