Presidential Freedom Scholarships Program

The program is designed to highlight and promote service and citizenship by students and to recognize students for their leadership in those areas. Each high school in the country may select up to two students - juniors or seniors - to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of outstanding leadership in service to their community. With funds appropriated by Congress, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 for each scholarship, which must be matched with $500 secured by the participating school from the community.

Matching funds may come from a variety of sources including:

High schools, PTAs , Booster or alumni clubs, School-related groups, Education foundations

Faith-based organizations, Local chapters of fraternities and sororities, Moose lodges, Dollars for Scholars, and Rotary Community foundations.

Securing a $500 match from multiple sources is also permissible. On the national level, Kiwanis International and Alpha Kappa Alpha have pledged to match Presidential Freedom Scholarships, and schools can contact these organizations in their local area.

Last year (2004), we awarded 6,604 scholarships nationwide totaling $3,302,000. This year we would like to award all 7,800 available scholarships. We have an easy-to-use online application submission and encourage all high schools to submit their student nominations using this method. Last year (2004) over 50% of the applications were submitted online. For more detailed information, please visit the program website www.nationalservice.org/scholarships.
