Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.
Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) seeks to enhance and expand delivery of legal immigration services to indigent and low-income immigrants principally through Catholic supported, community-based immigration programs and to meet the immigration needs identified by the Catholic Church in the United States. CLINIC and its network of member agencies serve the most vulnerable, poor, and low-income immigrants regardless of race, religion, or national origin. A major part of CLINIC’s work is helping immigrants to become U.S. citizens.
Goals
CLINIC’s goals for its citizenship program are to: 1) expand the availability of high-quality, affordable naturalization legal assistance in immigrant communities; 2) increase immigrants= knowledge of the benefits, requirements, and responsibilities of citizenship; 3) increase the number of immigrants who are U.S. citizens; and 4) strengthen the citizenship application process through improved transparency, accountability, and customer service within the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To date, CLINIC=s citizenship projects have assisted over 70,000 elderly, disabled, low-income, and low-literate newcomers in the naturalization process. As a result, these new citizens are experiencing greater freedom, economic security, and a political voice.
For the coming year, CLINIC’s goals are to: 1) obtain more broad-based funding to expand citizenship assistance; 2) ensure that a new citizenship test is fair and accessible by providing input on the test revision process; 3) research and report on the resources and infrastructure needed to naturalize the 8-plus million immigrants currently eligible; and 4) improve the quality and responsiveness of USCIS services.
