The Civic Practices Network

The Civic Practices Network is an online network of civic leaders, practitioners, and scholars who have worked since 1995 to develop and share case studies, best practices, academic studies, and practical toolkits of civic innovation in the U.S.

Its core partners include prominent national organizations, such as the National Civic League, Kettering Foundation, and Study Circles Resource Center, as well as several university institutes, such as the Center for Youth and Communities (Brandeis University), Center for Communication and Democracy (University of Wisconsin-Madison), and Center for Democracy and Citizenship (Humphrey Institute, University of Minnesota). CPN's resources, as well as its core editorial team's consulting and advising, have been utilized widely by various civic renewal projects and organizations, including the National Commission on Civic Renewal, YMCA of the USA, City Year, Pew Charitable Trusts, Campus Compact, CIRCLE (Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement), Innovation Center for Community and Youth Development, AARP, PBS Democracy Project, Pew Center for Civic Journalism, and several federal agencies. Our editorial team of Carmen Sirianni, Lewis Friedland, and Melissa Bass have also published their research in numerous articles and several books (Civic Innovation in America, Univ. of California Press, 2001; The Civic Renewal Movement, Kettering Foundation Press, 2005; and two books in progress: Investing in Democracy, and The Politics and Civics of National Service), as well as several curricula on active citizenship for AmeriCorps and University Extension. Our goal is to share resources to help catalyze innovative and collaborative civic models and practices in communities and institutions, as well as through government agencies.
